The Primrose Overlook Hike via the Horse Flat Trail, Utah
Blog Post - October 15, 2023
The Primrose Overlook Hike is located up American Fork Canyon off of the Alpine Loop.
This overlook has an incredible view of the backside of Mount Timpanogos and Roberts Horn.
This is a 3.1 mile out and back hike that is rated a moderate hike.
We drove through American Fork Canyon on the Alpine Loop. This took us to the Flat Horse Trailhead parking lot.
As we pulled into the parking lot, we found a space and parked. There was a sign and a box to pay the self-service pay station. A 3 day pass is $6 and a 7-day pass is $12. They also honor National Parks passes. We had our National Parks Pass, so we hung it on our mirror in our car and headed to the trailhead.

You can see the map below from the parking lot to the overlook.
We headed out on the trail. When you start the trail you head to your left. There are signs along the way that will let you know you are heading the correct way. These signs have the Horse Flat Trail on it.
The trail opened up to a large field with some amazing views. The trail was very visible and easy to follow.
The last part of the hike had seem steeper hiking, but you'll know you're almost to the overlook.
We finally made it to the overlook and these views did not dissapoint. Absolutely amazing!
There's a large rocky area where most people hang out. This isn't the end of the hike, but has great views. You can see us in the red circle.
From there, you can take the trail farther down the mountain. Here's a view of where the trail ends.
Here are some more views from the overlook.
Overall, we loved this hike and these amazing views. We would highly recommend hiking to the Primrose Overlook.
