Pohoiki Black Sand Beach at Isaac Hale Beach Park on the Big Island of Hawaii
Blog Post - Nov 16, 2023
Pohoiki Black Sand Beach is located at Isaac Hale Beach Park on the Big Island of Hawaii.
This is the newest black sand beach from the lava flow of 2018.
You can still see the old boat ramp that used allow boats into the bay.
Now you have a long and beautiful black sand beach.
This beach is located on the southeast side of the Big Island of Hawaii.
When we arrived we saw that the gate was closed.
We parked on the side of the road in the grass and went to talk to the guard at the gate.
We found out that they close Isaac Hale Beach Park each 3rd Thursday of the month for maintenance.
The guard told us that we could just walk in and explore, so that's exactly what we did.
As we walked down to the beach we saw that they have public bathrooms, porta-potties, and lots of parking.
This is an aerial view of the parking area, the beach, and you can see where the lava flow stopped.
As we walked in you can see the old boat ramp at the harbor.
This used to allow boats to go right out into the bay.
Now it is a warm pond that you can swim in.
This is the view as we walked out onto the black sand beach.
There are two lifeguard stands on this beach.
The beach is a mixture of large lava rocks down to soft black sand depending on the spot.
We started to explore the beach and watch the waves crash.
As we walked down the beach we got to a short wall made from lava rocks.
There was a sign letting us know that this is sacred area.
You are allowed to explore as long as you treat it that way.
This part of the beach was beautiful and had some softer black sand.
As we walked this part of the beach we had sun on one side and clouds and a rainbow on the other side.
Then we decided to explore some of the hot springs.
This was the entrance to one of the hot springs.
We walked a short trail and felt the water.
It was hot just like a bathtub.
We felt the water, but didn't get in as we were already hot from hiking this long beach.
After exploring the entire beach and the hot springs, we headed back to our car.
This beach was amazing and we would highly recommend going on your next trip to the Big Island of Hawaii.
