The Ahihi-Kina'u Natural Area Reserve is located at the end of Makena Road on the south end of Maui, Hawaii.
This is a protected area so there are lots of turtles and lots of different marine life.
The parking lot is now paved and has a $5 parking fee that you pay via credit card at the parking meter. Once you've paid, you put your receipt on the dash of your car.
Make sure to bring your own snorkel gear and some snacks for after snorkeling. Here are some pics from our day there.
The Ahihi-Kina'u Natural Area Reserve is open from 5:30 am to 7:30pm according to this sign.
You now need to purchase a parking pass to park. It costs $5 for the day.
This used to be an unpaved parking lot, but now that it is paved, the implemented the parking fee to cover it.
The entrance to the trail reminds you to pay for your parking before entering.
The trail down to the water is made up of lava rock.
As you get closer to the water, you will see a map that shows you where to enter the water for snorkeling. This trail is called the Kanahena Trail.
The entrance to the water opens up from the rocky area and has a little beach area.
As we got into the water to snorkel, you can see that instead of sand, it is black lava rocks.
As we snorkeled this area, we saw all sorts of marine life!
We finished snorkeling and this was the view of the beach area as more people were arriving.
Overall, we had a great time snorkeling at the Ahihi-Kinau-Natural-Area-Reserve. Our highlight was swimming with the turtles. We would highly recommend snorkeling here!
